Washington D.C. 7 April 2023 (PAHO) – The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) participated in the Consortium of Universities for Global Health 2023 (CUGH 2023) in a session on “Building sustainable health workforce capacity,” on April 6, 2023.
James Fitzgerald, Director PAHO Department of Health Systems and Services, and Jim Campbell, Director of WHO Health Workforce, joined other health leaders on a satellite session to discuss goals, lessons learned, and opportunities for new innovative approaches for building workforce capacity.
The objectives of the session were to describe global workforce capacity development goals and shortfalls; determine what Universities can do to support efforts of LMIC-led health workforce capacity-building agenda; and discuss how Universities can ensure they are not perpetuating historical and current inequities and work toward a more diverse, equitable, inclusive, and accessible health workforce development approach with its activities.
The CUGH 2023 theme was “Global Health at a Crossroads: Equity, Climate Change, and Microbial Threats.” Over 2,000 scientists, students, and implementers from academia, NGOs, government, and the private sector presented, learned and collaborated during the CUGH 2023 to address some of the word challenges.
