The Pan American Health Organization PAHO joins once again in 2015, and will celebrate this date in harmony with the ILO campaign Join in building a Culture of Prevention on OSH.
Acknowledging the immense need for healthy, decent and productive work required by millions of people under the poverty line in the region, PAHO's commemoration focuses on addressing the needs of working vulnerable populations (working poor, informal workers, women, indigenous and elderly people, etc.) and enhancing participatory methods that improve their work and life quality.
Preventive and participatory approaches to promote workers' health and wellbeing for vulnerable workers of the Americas
The International Labor Office (ILO) declared April 28 World Day for Safety and Health at Work. Each year this date is observed in commemoration of the workers who suffered injuries, diseases or fatalities; and to celebrate those that were effectively prevented. At the same time, it aims to promoting prevention of occupational injuries and diseases. Since 2003 this celebration has taken place involving all stakeholders at global, regional and national levels through a multipartite approach and social dialogue. In some countries such as Argentina and Peru, it has been extended to be a whole week celebration.
In consequence, a mini-series of webinars aimed to improve and promote workers' health and wellbeing for excluded workers and the most vulnerable population in Member States has been programmed, and will be held as follows:
- Tuesday, 7 April 2015: "Communities of practice: Successful experiences with participatory methods and strategic alliances to include the socially excluded."
- Monday, 27 April 2015: "Healthy Workplaces: a choice for improving health of marginalized communities."
- Tuesday, 28 April 2015: Social media marathon via Tweeter and Facebook
- Wednesday, 19 May 2015: "Participatory Ergonomics: a safe railroad to health equity and social inclusion."
