Lima, October 30 and 31-. An important meeting to encourage the pilot implementation of a training program for caregivers of children with autismand other developmental disorders, in the context of the Peruvian health services, was held at the Children and Adolescents Service of the National Institute of Mental Health "Honorio Delgado - Hideyo Noguchi".
It was organized by the Pan American Health Organization together with Autism Speaks. Both institutions have linked up with the Mental Health Executive Office of the Ministry of Health, the National Institute of Mental Health and the community mental health centers, to concretize the review and contextualization of the program, taking into account it is currently being implemented as a pilot project in several countries.
Three child psychiatrists and a qualitative research sociologist from the National Institute of Mental Health, members of the mental health technical team of the Ministry of Health and the non-medical staff of Puente Piedra's "Renato Castro de la Mata" Community Mental Health Center participated on this occasion. With the advice of Autism Speaks consultant, Dr. Cecilia Montiel Nava, they will be responsible for working on the details to finalize the pilot implementation in the medium term.
The upcoming start of the activities will be beneficial to health workers, parents, caregivers and children with autism and other developmental disorders, given that the Peruvian health system lacks specialized care for these disorders and early detection is fundamental to guarantee a better quality of life to them all.
