Santiago de Chile, 26 July 2012 (PAHO/WHO) - Ministers of Health and Agriculture in the Americas are meeting today and tomorrow to discuss the challenges and opportunities to meet the growing demand for safe food, accessible and sustainable. They want to make the production of food sustainable with environment and safe for the health of consumers and those working in the food chain.
The theme of the 16th Inter-American Meeting at Ministerial Level on Health and Agriculture (RIMSA 16) is "Agriculture-Health-Environment: joining efforts for the wellbeing of the Americas." During the event, participants will also discuss how to improve the management of risks to human health, food production and ecosystem.
On July 27, the director of the Pan American Health Organization, Dr. Mirta Roses, will present a conference on primary "Agriculture, Nutrition and Health".
RIMSA is the most important forum in the Americas for the definition of cross-sectoral policies on health and agriculture, and veterinary public health. It brings together the ministers of health and agriculture in the region, representatives of producers and consumers, and international organizations. It is the only regional forum composed of ministers from both health and agriculture sectors.
The meeting is organized for the Pan American Health Organization / World Health Organization (PAHO / WHO) through its Pan American Foot-and-Mouth Disease Center (PANAFTOSA), supported and sponsored by the Government of Chile, through the Ministries of Health and Agriculture.
