Washington, D.C., October 2, 2024 (PAHO) – The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) presented an ambitious roadmap for developing its new Strategic Plan 2026-2031, which will set the course for technical cooperation in health for that period. The document incorporates best practices in strategic planning and results-based management, as well as lessons learned from the current plan.
The roadmap, presented to the 61st Directing Council of PAHO, establishes a process that will allow the next strategic plan to respond to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to health and address the regional priorities established in the Sustainable Health Agenda for the Americas 2018-2030 (ASSA2030).
The strategic plan seeks to ensure that PAHO continues to add value to national efforts to improve health and well-being in each country and territory of the region, and in reducing inequities.
"The next strategic plan represents an opportunity to shape the future of health in the Americas," Dr. Jarbas Barbosa, Director of PAHO said. "Working together with our Member States and partners, we can create a healthier and more equitable Americas for all," he added.
The development of the Strategic Plan 2026-2031 will be carried out in three phases: preparation (already completed), analysis and drafting (from July 2024 to February 2025), and adjustment and approval (from March to September 2025). The process is expected to include broad consultations with Member States and other relevant stakeholders, ensuring that the perspectives of various stakeholders are integrated into the development of the plan.
PAHO reaffirms its commitment to transparency and accountability, and seeks to strengthen partnerships with Member States and other strategic partners to address the health challenges facing the region.
The plan will be presented for discussion and approval by PAHO Member States in 2025.
