Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago, 19 April 2016. Thirty Obstetricians and Midwives were trained to use live-saving procedures and devices to manage Post-Partum Haemorrahage (PPH) i.e. bleeding after delivering a baby, a leading cause of maternal deaths world-wide and in Trinidad and Tobago. Participants were also trained in the early diagnosis of PPH by a highly specialized technical team from PAHO’s Centre for Perinatology and Women’s Reproductive Health (CLAP/WRH) Uruguay Office in sessions conducted 11-12 April, 2016 at the Trinidad Hotel and Conference Centre.
Dr. Bernadette-Theodore Gandi, the PAHO/WHO representative in Trinidad and Tobago noted that this intervention is being provided through the project, developed in consultation with stakeholders: ‘Improving Maternal, Neonatal, Child and Adolescent Health through quality interventions in Trinidad and Tobago’ which was approved by Cabinet and launched in September 2015.
The PAHO/CLAP team spent four days in Trinidad which included site visits to the Ante-natal Clinics and the Women’s Hospitals in the NCRHA and SWRHA to conduct a comprehensive assessment of protocols and maternal care provided at these institutions. A report on the team’s findings will be presented to the Ministry of Health and will assist PAHO to define areas for support to the Government of Trinidad and Tobago to eliminate avoidable maternal deaths.
The team, led by Dr. Rodolfo Gomez Ponce de Leon, also presented the latest guidelines and updates on ZIKA and Microcephaly Surveillance and Management to students and faculty at the Mt. Hope Women’s Hospital at a session attended by the Honourable Minister of Health, Terrence Deyalsingh.
