Belize City, Belize, April 7, 2025 (PAHO) — The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization observed World Health Day 2025 on April 7 under the theme “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures,” focusing on the importance of improving maternal and newborn health. Maternal health before, during, and after pregnancy and childbirth plays a pivotal role as the foundation of healthy families and communities.
One of Belize’s most significant health achievements has been the successful elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis in 2023. This milestone, achieved through efforts by the Ministry of Health and Wellness, PAHO/WHO, health professionals/workers, and civil society organizations, underscores Belize’s commitment to protecting maternal and child health. By ensuring that pregnant women have access to comprehensive care, we are not only safeguarding their health but also guaranteeing that babies are born healthy and protected from preventable infections and deaths.
Based on current estimates, globally, nearly 300,000 women lose their lives due to pregnancy or childbirth each year. Additionally, over 2 million babies die in their first month of life. Access to high-quality care is crucial to reducing maternal and infant mortality.
In Belize, the healthcare system continues to strengthen efforts in providing women with the support they need before, during, and after pregnancy and childbirth. Healthcare workers, including doctors, nurses, and community health workers, ensure that women receive essential services such as regular check-ups, screenings, and counseling throughout their pregnancy. These services play a vital role in preventing complications and ending preventable maternal and newborn deaths.
It’s also important to highlight the upcoming Vaccination Week in the Americas to be observed at the end of the month. This annual event promotes the importance of immunization in protecting children, mothers, and entire communities from preventable diseases. Vaccination is key in safeguarding maternal and child health, preventing life-threatening diseases such as measles, polio, and hepatitis, and ensuring that every child has a hopeful future.
While Belize has made great strides in improving maternal and newborn health, there is still much work to be done. Continuing efforts to expand access to healthcare, raising awareness about the importance of women’s long-term well-being, investing in high-quality health care, and promoting healthy practices and support for mothers and children are essential for building a healthier future for Belize.
As we celebrate World Health Day and Vaccination Week in the Americas, PAHO Belize will continue to provide technical cooperation to the government, the health community, all individuals, families, and communities to prioritize maternal and newborn health. Together, we can ensure healthy beginnings and a hopeful future for every mother and child in Belize.
