Adequate newborn and early childhood nutrition not only save lives but allow children to grow and reach their full potential. Exclusive breastfeeding is one of the most effective interventions to ensure that newborns survive and thrive. Human milk offers newborns essential nutrients, protects them against infections and promotes optimal physical and cognitive development.
Among the specific interventions aimed at promoting and favoring breastfeeding, human milk banks represent a relevant strategy, particularly in situations where breastfeeding is not possible.
The seminar aims to address the aforementioned aspects in order to achieve the following objectives:
- Emphasize the importance of feeding all newborns with human milk, particularly preterm, small and sick newborns.
- Present the specific guidelines for the establishment, implementation and evaluation of the human milk bank strategy.
- Promote specific interventions in the countries of the region around feeding with human milk.
Interpretation will be available in Spanish, English and Portuguese.
