Join us on Friday, December 6, 2024, at 9:30 a.m. (Washington DC, or EST) for the event Reflecting on the development and implementation of national strategies to prevent violence against women and girls, a joint event between UN Women, the Pan American Health Organization, and the World Bank in the framework of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. The event will bring together activists, policy-makers, and representatives from the United Nations (UN) System and The World Bank (WB) to discuss what governments, the international community, and civil society can do to invest in the reduction and prevention.

Event Objectives:

The main objective is for the RESPECT framework to serve as a key tool in developing National Plans or Programs for the Prevention of VAWG. These plans, which must be intersectoral and comprehensive, are the most effective way to advance in preventing and reducing violence in the long term. The specific objectives of the event are:

  • To promote intersectoral commitments for designing and implementing prevention and response policies to VAWG that are aligned with the RESPECT framework.
  • To strengthen dialogue between government actors, agencies of the United Nations system, and civil society for the development of National Plans and Programs for the prevention of violence against women.
  • To consolidate cooperation between sectors and agencies to ensure that prevention efforts are effective and sustainable.
  • To facilitate and promote the implementation of national workshops based on the Guide, adapting the content and methodology to each country's specific needs, with the collaboration of PAHO, UN Women, and the World Bank.

CONTEXT

Since 2019, UN Women, PAHO and the World Bank have been working in a coordinated manner to disseminate the RESPECT global framework in Latin America and the Caribbean. This framework, based on evidence from successful experiences around the world, provides effective strategies for the design and implementation of public prevention policies, so that they can be adapted to the local realities of each country.

The event represents a new milestone on this path and offers an opportunity to take stock of the achievements made and highlight the new RESPECT tools, such as the “Guide for the implementation of workshops on the RESPECT global framework” developed with the support of Global Affairs Canada. Through the interactive modality, the aim is to promote dialogue and encourage coordinated work between the main areas of government that must be involved in the prevention of violence.
