Join us on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. (EDT—Washington, D.C. time) for the webinar "Presentation of the WHO SHAKE 2.0 Guide and Advances in Salt Reduction in the Americas" during the 2025 Salt Awareness Week, May 12-18. This webinar will provide an overview of the SHAKE 2.0: Less Salt, More Health technical package and provide country experiences in implementing regulatory and social marketing interventions for sodium reduction.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

CONTEXT

Excessive salt consumption increases the risk of hypertension, the main cause of stroke and ischemic heart disease. Salt awareness week will help remind us of the harmful effects of eating too much salt and bring attention to the unnecessarily high levels of salt in everyday foods. We encourage the public to play their part and make simple changes to their eating and purchasing habits, and will provide 5 ways to 5 grams, which are 5 simple actions you can take to bring your salt intake down. Additionally, there are population-level measures that governments can take to support informed purchase and dietary decisions.

PAHO supports Salt Awareness Week by joining efforts with the international community and promoting policy actions to reduce salt intake in the Region of the Americas and protect public health. In many countries, three-quarters of dietary sodium comes from processed and ultraprocessed foods such as sauces and dressings, bread, crackers, cookies, ready-to-eat meals, processed meats, and cheeses. An effective way of reducing population sodium intake is reducing sodium content in frequently consumed foods and implementing other regulatory actions to support the population in making informed purchase decisions.

WHO will launch “SHAKE 2.0: The Salt Habit, A Guide for Program Design”, providing a strategic framework aimed at reducing sodium intake from all sources, including prepackaged food, meals consumed outside the home, and discretionary salt use. This new version of the SHAKE Package outlines the necessary steps and considerations for preparing, developing, implementing, monitoring, enforcing, and evaluating effective policies and interventions. Although the SHAKE acronym was retained, it no longer corresponds to specific sections, but features new and updated data for impact and monitoring, as well as updated interventions that align with the latest WHO guidelines and best practices.
