The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) invites to participate in the Call for Action: Zero Preventable Maternal Deaths, to accelerate the reduction of maternal mortality in Latin America and the Caribbean.
In 2020, one maternal death occurred every hour in the Latin American and Caribbean Region (LAC). For that same year, the trend in the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) in the region fell back to the levels of 20 years ago. These figures not only imply a setback in maternal outcomes, but also a deepening of inequalities, representing thousands of particular and unacceptable tragedies that in most cases would be avoidable.
PAHO seeks to reposition the issue of maternal health as a priority that cannot be postponed, given the unacceptable fact that a high number of preventable maternal deaths continue to occur.
The current scenario demands an urgent mobilization of the health systems of LAC countries to strengthen actions aimed at combating preventable maternal mortality, especially in those countries that are still far from contributing to the regional target of the Sustainable Health Agenda for the Americas 2018-2030 (SHAA).
