Join us on Friday, December 6, 2023, at 9:30 a.m. (Washington DC, or EST) for the event Accelerating Action to Prevent Violence against Women and Girls through RESPECT, a joint event between UN Women, the Pan American Health Organization, and the World Bank in the framework of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. The event will bring together activists, policy-makers, and representatives from the United Nations (UN) System and The World Bank (WB) to discuss what governments, the international community, and civil society can do to invest in the reduction and prevention.

Event Objectives:

The main objective is for the RESPECT framework to serve as a key tool in developing National Plans or Programs for the Prevention of VAWG. These plans, which must be intersectoral and comprehensive, are the most effective way to advance in preventing and reducing violence in the long term. The specific objectives of the event are:

  • To promote intersectoral commitments for designing and implementing prevention and response policies to VAWG that are aligned with the RESPECT framework.
  • To strengthen dialogue between government actors, agencies of the United Nations system, and civil society for the development of National Plans and Programs for the prevention of violence against women.
  • To consolidate cooperation between sectors and agencies to ensure that prevention efforts are effective and sustainable.
  • To facilitate and promote the implementation of national workshops based on the Guide, adapting the content and methodology to each country's specific needs, with the collaboration of PAHO, UN Women, and the World Bank.

CONTEXT

Gender-based violence (GBV) affects nearly 1 in 3 women worldwide, with profound negative consequences not only for survivors but for families, communities, and society as a whole. Violence prevents women and girls from building their human capital and hinders the economic development of societies. A World Bank Group report estimated the costs of intimate partner violence can be up to 3.7% of GDP. Eradicating GBV should be a priority not only because women, girls, men, and boys deserve to live their lives free of all forms of violence and with equal opportunities, but also because it is an economic issue: addressing GBV enables women and girls to be healthy, to remain and perform well in schools, which increases their opportunities to access better jobs, and to contribute to economies. GBV is the most pervasive form of gender-based discrimination that comes in the way of achieving gender equality, a prerequisite for achieving sustainable development.

As the global community approaches the 30th-anniversary review of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action implementation, and following the 2023 SDG Summit’s call for accelerated progress toward achieving the 2030 Agenda, VAWG remains alarmingly prevalent. This year, the UNiTE campaign will aim to mobilize around the priorities of the Beijing +30 review by emphasizing the urgency of strengthening accountability for ending violence against women and girls. It calls for concrete actions, including holding perpetrators accountable, and accelerating action through well-resourced national strategies and increased funding to women’s rights movements.
