People living with mental health conditions are among the most vulnerable in society, as they are victims of enormous prejudice, discrimination, and violations of their fundamental rights. Throughout history, people with disabilities, particularly those with mental health conditions, have been denied the ability to make their own decisions and exercise personal and individual control in all areas of their lives.
The instruments and mechanisms of the United Nations and the Inter-American System of Human Rights provide a solid basis for the adoption of measures to promote and protect the rights of persons with mental health conditions in the Region of the Americas.
