January 2015 BACKGROUNDAll parties to the Consortium affirm the strength of the evidence relating the overconsumption of salt/sodium to high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, stroke and kidney disease and affirm that lowering salt/sodium intake is a best buy for preventing and lowering the risk for these diseases. The global target of 30% relative reduction in salt/sodium intake is a means by which the populations of WHO Member States can reach the recommended intake level of <2000mg sodium per day.
