World No Tobacco Day
Every year, on 31 May, WHO and partners everywhere mark World No Tobacco Day, highlighting the health risks associated with tobacco use and advocating for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption.
Tobacco use is the single most preventable cause of death globally and is currently responsible for killing one in 10 adults worldwide.
In 2022, the theme is "Tobacco, a threat to the environment". The harmful impact of the tobacco industry on the environment is vast and growing adding unnecessary pressure to our planet’s already scarce resources and fragile ecosystems. Tobacco kills over 8 million people every year and destroys our environment, further harming human health, through the cultivation, production, distribution, consumption, and post consumer waste.
