International Consultant - Health promotion and program management

Objective of the Department:

The Department of Family, Health Promotion and Life Course (FPL) of the Pan American Health Organization promotes, coordinates, and implements technical cooperation at the regional, sub regional and country levels, emphasizing the central role of the family and community to foster a culture of health promotion and protection in which health is a social value and a human right. FPL focuses on the development and implementation of programs for women and men’s health; sexual and reproductive health; maternal and neonatal health; the integrated health and development of children and adolescents; the health of aging populations; food and nutrition; comprehensive family immunization and leads innovative, inter-sectoral and strategic efforts to address the social determinants of health.

The Health Promotion Unit (FPL/HP) covers the areas of Health Promotion, social determinants and health, workers health, urban health, and community participation. It promotes and coordinates technical cooperation and alliances to support the efforts from the Member States to achieve health for all people in the Americas though health promoting strategies and public policies that address social determinants of health at national, subnational and local level.

Responsibilities:

This consultancy takes place within the context of the implementation of the Strategy and Plan of Action on Health Promotion within the context of the Development Goals 2019-2030. Particularly the area of community participation and health promoting strategies, policies and settings are of importance within the context of COVID-19.

Under the supervision of the Unit Chief, Health Promotion and Social Determinants (FPL/HP), the incumbent is responsible for, but not limited to, the following assigned duties:

Activities

As Programme Officer:

  • coordinate the programmatic aspects of the programs and projects for PB 2022-2023, including programing, monitoring and evaluation of budget,
  • Reporting requirements of the programs and projects of the unit, including PMA
  • Follow up on the adequate financial implications of the VC projects (Urban governance for health and well-being, social determinants of health, Canada project, RWJF, Susan Buffet and others)

As Health Promotion consultant:

  • Coordinate HP activities in the area of urban health, movement of healthy municipalies, cities and communities
  • Coordinate HP activities in the area of healthy settings
  • Coordinate wellness-week and other HP campaigns
  • Monitor and evaluate the HP Strategy and Plan of Action 2019-2030
  • Support the development of Governing Body documents
  • Coordinate HP interns
  • Other actions as necessary

Education requirements (Qualifications)

  • Essential: Medical Degree
  • Experience requirements: minimum experience of 4 years working in health promotion at international level, minimum of 1 year of experience in program management in international organization Essential: Writer/editor fluent in Spanish and English with minimum experience of 5 years working with immunization and public health terminology.
  • Languages: Very good knowledge of English or Spanish with a working knowledge of the other language. Knowledge of French Portuguese would be an asset. 

Expected contract duration

12 months, with possibility of extension based on performance and funds availability. (Starting 17/01/2022)
