PAHO/WHO fellows, trainees, interns and volunteers come from around the world to pursue training opportunities in public health and related fields. While their technical areas and professions may vary - researchers, clinicians, technicians, professors - they have a unifying goal to gain knowledge and skills that will ultimately help improve their countries' public health care systems. Following some information's fellowships that have been take place in the last years in the Americas.

Patrick Jouissance, a family physician from Haiti and Fulbright graduate student at the University of Florida-Tampa, undertook his practical training at PAHO/WHO, Washington, D.C. where he conducted research and prepared a paper on "Mid-level Health Care Professional Programs Worldwide and the Haitian Perspective." Jouissance started working with Partners in Health after his return to Haiti.
Lotay Tshering, a young surgeon from the Ministry of Health of Bhutan, studied Urology at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee under his WHO Fellowship. Upon his return, he was the only practicing trained Urologist in Bhutan.
Rezika Mohammed Yesuf, from Ethiopia, participated in the WHO/TDR Clinical Research Career Development Fellowship at Astellas Pharma Global Development, Inc. in Northbrook, Illinois which included a two-month practicum at the Astellas Leiden office in the Netherlands.
Zhang Feng, a journalist from the China Daily newspaper, participated in a two-week WHO Fellowship Study Tour on "Health and Risk Communications," in response to the media challenges China faced during and after the SARS outbreak. The study tour included meetings with professional counterparts in the United States and Canada.
Juan Pablo Pagano, health economist from Uruguay, was a Hubert H. Humphrey Fellow who carried out his ‘professional affiliation' at PAHO/WHO, Washington, D.C. During his two-month practicum, he focused on health economics and financing, resulting in a report on ‘out-of-pocket payments and financial protection' in the Region of the Americas.
Licia Lemos, an international relations/ cooperation specialist with the Brazilian Ministry of Health, was a Hubert H. Humphrey Fellow who undertook her ‘professional affiliation' at PAHO/WHO, Washington, D.C. Ms. Lemos supported efforts to mobilize resources for neglected diseases in Latin America's Chaco Region and she also worked on a collaborative agreement between PAHO and Brazil's Oswaldo Cruz Foundation for the surveillance, prevention and elimination of zoonosis and communicable diseases.
Varadarajan Parthasarathy of India, was a WHO Fellow Research Scholar at Harvard Medical School. During his Fellowship, he successfully cloned and produced a membrane protein (recombinant IgSF8) which linked the cancer microenvironment with immune cells. These encouraging results against breast cancer and the expertise gained at Harvard, helped him to establish a research facility at Annamalai University in India to continue research for new anticancer drugs.
