In 2020, the Campo Grande City Hall (State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil) carried out the rezoning of 14 de Julho Street in the commercial center of the city.
This tactical urban planning action involved the introduction of new paving, street furniture, landscaping and removal of power cables, embedded of the power grid. The street was reborn with a different concept, that of calm traffic, prioritizing the active transport of pedestrians and cyclists over motorized traffic.
Rua 14 de Julho is the first in the central region to adopt the concept of calm traffic in Campo Grande. The 30 km/h speed limit, enabled by the road design, and combined with raised pedestrian crossings and wider sidewalks, comply with what is advocated by the Sixth United Nations Global Road Safety Week 2021.
There is a change of posture, where the city is beginning to think on a human scale, and reducing the speed of cars and implementing more space for pedestrians is essential in this process". - Catiana Sabadin, Coordinator of the Campo Grande Urban Revitalization Program.
Besides contributing to the reduction of the number of crashes on the main road in the central area of the city, the structural changes made to Rua 14 de Julho provide more opportunity for physical activity, better air quality, less noise and stress. They thus contribute to the protection factors of the main non-communicable diseases, such as cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, and diabetes.
