The opening session on Monday, September 28, at 9 a.m., will have comments by PAHO Director Dr. Mirta Roses, World Health Organization Director-General Dr. Margaret Chan, the Secretary General of the Organization of American States José Miguel Insulza, and the President of the Inter-American Development Bank Luis Alberto Moreno; and welcoming remarks by U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius.

Hemisphere's Health Authorities to Gather at PAHO
WHAT: The ministers of health of all the countries of the Americas will gather for the annual meeting of the Directing Council of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).
WHEN: The opening session will take place Monday, September 28, at 9 a.m., with comments by PAHO Director Dr. Mirta Roses, World Health Organization Director-General Dr. Margaret Chan, Secretary General of the Organization of American States José Miguel Insulza, and President of the Inter-American Development Bank Luis Alberto Moreno; and with welcoming remarks on behalf of the host country by U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius.
WHERE: In Room A, 2nd Floor, at PAHO headquarters, 525 23rd Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. (corner of Virginia Ave. and 23rd St., N.W., four blocks from the Foggy Bottom Metro station.)
WHY: The purpose of the meeting is to make new policy decisions that address the critical health problems of the region. Among key topics to be discussed are: pandemic H1N1, neglected diseases and other poverty-related infections, primary health care, nutrition and development for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, safe hospitals, adolescent and youth health, gender equality, human organ donation and transplantation, health and tourism, family and community health, and the presentation of the PAHO Director's Annual Report.
