Washington, D.C., 8 February 2017 (PAHO/WHO) - A delegation from Brazil's Ministry of Health and Social Security Commission of the National Congress visited the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) this week to highlight their country's efforts to advance health equity and to discuss collaboration with PAHO in addressing the special needs of migrant populations.

The visiting delegation was led by Brazil's Secretary of Strategic and Participatory Management in the Ministry of Health (SGEP/MS), Gerlane Baccarin, and included Hiran Gonçalves, a member of Brazil's National Congress and vice-president of its Social Security Comission, and Ésdras Daniel, also of SGEP/MS.

The delegation met with PAHO Assistant Director Francisco Becerra and Director of External Relations, Partnerships, and Resource Mobilization Alberto Kleiman and participated in a workshop with PAHO technical staff.

In the workshop, the Brazilians presented their country's actions and policies to promote health equity, particularly for vulnerable populations. They also shared details about a regional meeting on health equity policies that is being organized jointly by Brazil's Ministry of Health and the PAHO country office and is scheduled for March 28- 29 in Brazil.

Also discussed in the workshop were the special health needs of Brazil's migrant population and how the national Unified Health System (SUS) is working to address those needs. The workshop provided input toward the development of a plan of action in this area and explored other potential technical cooperation initiatives based on a resolution on the health of migrants adopted during PAHO's 55th Directing Council meeting last year.
