Sao Paulo, October 7, 2024 – The winners of the 6th SBIm Health Journalism Award were revealed on October 4, at a ceremony in the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The award, an initiative of the Brazilian Immunization Society (SBIm) supported this year by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), aimed to raise awareness to the theme “Vaccine hesitancy: causes, consequences and solutions”. More than 100 news, created by professionals from all over the country, were submitted.
In the Print category, the winners were Nubya Oliveira and Cinthya Oliveira, from the newspaper O Tempo, authors of the report “Vaccine hesitancy among young people raises alarm bells for specialists - Indecision is the main threat to global health”. Second place went to Paula Félix, from Veja magazine, for the article “Vaccine that is a weapon against cancer faces below the target coverage”, and the third place went to Isabel Dourado, from the newspaper Correio Braziliense, for “Five decades of the immunization program”.
Journalist Fernanda Bassette, from Agência Einstein, was the winner in the Text for the Internet category, for the report “One in four parents cannot vaccinate their children, even when going to the healthcare facility”. Completed the podium, in second place, Camilla Soares, from the media outlet UOL, for “Can men get the HPV vaccine? Find out how is vaccination in Brazil”, and in third place, Vinícius Lisboa, from Agência Brasil, for “Racism keeps black and indigenous people away from vaccination”.
In the Audio and Video category, the victor was the team formed by Paloma Rodrigues, Raquel Honorato, Caroline Manhani, Fernando Rodrigues, Samuel Gonzaga and Bárbara Loiola. The professionals, from TV Globo, produced the feature story “Ministry of Health tries to reverse negative vaccination scenario by combating fake news”. Second place went to Paula Alves, Messias Braga, Fernando Almeida and Jackson Machado, from Inter TV Grande Minas, for the feature story “WHO recognizes vaccine refusal as a global public health issue”, and third place went to Tâmara Freire and Sumaia Vilela, from Rádio Nacional, for the episode “Vaccination room: back on top” of the Sala de Vacina podcast.
The SBIm Health Journalism Award was created in 2009 with the goals of encouraging the production of news on immunizations and of recognizing the value of communication professionals, who are essential to public health in Brazil. In this edition, the winners of each category received a prize worth R$ 6,000, while the runners-up received R$ 3,000. All finalists received trophies and certificates.
