The Office of Gender and Cultural Diversity (GD) of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) organized a Regional Consultation on Cultural Diversity from the 30th of October to the 1st of November in Washington, D.C. The Consultation was carried out with the aim of reflecting upon and discussing the current situation of cultural diversity in the Region, the efforts made by PAHO to date and the next steps, taking into account the priorities of the Region, the MDGs and the Strategic Plan of 2014 — 2019.

Washington, D.C., 30th of October, 2013. The Office of Gender and Cultural Diversity (GD) of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) organized a Regional Consultation on Cultural Diversity from the 30th of October to the 1st of November in Washington, D.C. The Consultation was carried out with the aim of reflecting upon and discussing the current situation of cultural diversity in the Region, the efforts made by PAHO to date and the next steps, taking into account the priorities of the Region, the MDGs and the Strategic Plan of 2014 — 2019.
The Consultation was attended by the Cultural Diversity focal points of the country offices of: Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay and Peru. Also participating in the event were the PAHO/WHO Representatives of the Offices of Colombia and Honduras and representatives of the regional technical departments.
The Consultation delved into a technical document on Cultural Diversity and Health for the Region that is under development, taking into consideration the differences between countries as well as a reflection on the social and cultural data and the state of affairs for the Americas. The participants and the Management endorsed an agreement which stated that a technical document regarding strategic guidelines to improve health in the context of ethnic diversity is essential.
The Assistant Director of PAHO, Dr. Francisco Becerra, attended the final day of the event and participated in the final conclusions of the meeting as well as the closing ceremony.
