September 4, 2024 (PAHO) — Over 90 delegates from 40 countries and territories participated in the first consultation with Member States, an important milestone in the process for developing the next PAHO Strategic Plan.

The countries expressed appreciation for the inclusive and transparent process and committed to continue working with the Secretariat. They welcomed the clear and comprehensive presentations on the overview of the process, situation analysis, strategic objectives (SOs), and outcomes (OCMs).

The delegates noted the higher-level strategic and integrated approach, which highlights PAHO’s added value. They also noted that the proposed Results Framework is aligned with national health priorities, 14th General Programme of Work of WHO, and other regional and global frameworks.

The importance of aligning the Strategic Plan with existing mandates, to which Member States are already committed and taking action, was recognized. Additionally, the delegates highlighted the importance of regional solidarity and cooperation among Member States, along with the need to strengthen the capacity of Member States to act accordingly. They also raised specific topics as requiring stronger emphasis or clarification (e.g., equity, wellbeing, determinants), which will be addressed in the development of the document.

The development process will culminate with the presentation of the final draft at the 62nd PAHO Directing Council in September 2025, as outlined in the roadmap presented to the 61st PAHO Directing Council in September 2024 (CD61/INF/1).
