PAHO to honor Malaria Champions of the Americas on 7th Annual Malaria Day in the Americas

This year on Malaria Day in the Americas, November 6th 2013, the Pan American Health Organization will host a forum on "Defeating Malaria in the Americas: Perspectives on Costs, Current Resources, and Essential Investments" and an awards ceremony for the winners of the 2013 Malaria Champions of the Americas contest.

Who:  Organized by the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) in coordination with the Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF) and the George Washington University Center for Global Health (CGH).

The top three finalists of the 2013 Malaria Champions of the Americas contest will be honored, and their video profiles will be presented during the event:

  • Brazil: State Health Department of Acre
  • Colombia: Malaria Project, University of Antioquia Foundation (FUA) / Fund for Development Projects (FONADE)
  • Dominican Republic: National Center for Control of Tropical Diseases (CENCET)


Context:   Each year some 219 million people around the world suffer from malaria, and about 600,000 die from the disease. In the Americas, almost 106 million people live in areas at risk for malaria, although cases declined 58 percent and malaria deaths declined 70 percent between 2000 and 2012. The forum will feature perspectives from different global, regional and country stakeholders on defeating malaria and investing in the future.

The Malaria Champions of the Americas Award is an initiative of PAHO/WHO, PAHEF, and CGH that seeks to identify, celebrate, and provide avenues to emulate best practices and success stories in malaria prevention and control.
