Washington, DC, July 30, 2013 (PAHO/WHO) ? The Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Carissa F. Etienne, met on 29 July with Leónidas Rosa Bautista, Honduras's Ambassador to the Organization of American States (OAS) at PAHO headquarters in Washington, D.C. Their discussion focused on the health situation in Honduras and current and future PAHO technical cooperation in the country, particularly in the areas of health systems strengthening and procurement of medicines and medical supplies.
Etienne said Honduras is one of PAHO's priority countries and that it is important to begin the process of updating the Organization's technical cooperation strategy in the country. She also proposed that Honduras's new health minister, Salvador Pineda, visit El Salvador to learn about the latter's experiences with integrated health service networks and also visit PAHO headquarters to discuss Honduras's health challenges with PAHO departmental directors, who could provide recommendations.
The two discussed the possibility of PAHO's advising Honduras on supply and distribution of medicines and supplies, drawing on examples of other Member States' management of this area, which is critical for health system functioning.
