Georgetown, Guyana, 30 June 2024- As part of the ongoing efforts in the WHO Region of the Americas to strengthen epidemic intelligence, the Health Emergency Information and Risk Assessment Unit (HIM) of the PAHO Health Emergencies Department (PHE), in conjunction with the PAHO/WHO Guyana Country Office and the Guyana Ministry of Health, provided a training for Epidemic Intelligence from Open Sources (EIOS) which was held virtually for Guyana over five sessions occurring between 22 May and 12 June 2024.
This training was a follow-up to the EIOS training provided last year in Guyana between 28 February-2 March 2023, which introduced the system and initiative to the participants. This recent training was requested by the Guyana Ministry of Health in order to continue building capacity in the use of the system and to prioritize mass gathering monitoring for epidemic intelligence of the ICC Men’s T20 World Crick Cup, being held in several locations in the Region including Guyana during June 2024. Participants from multiple sectors joined the training, including the Guyana Ministry of Health, Guyana Livestock Development Authority, and Guyana Civil Defence Commission.
This event is part of the Organization's efforts to contribute to amplifying the scope of this collaborative network in the Region of the Americas which pursues a unified "One Health" approach to the early detection, verification, assessment, and communication of potential public health threats.
