Washington, D.C., 30 October 2013 (PAHO/WHO) — Dr. Carissa F. Etienne will travel to Canada this week for her first official visit to the country since becoming director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).
During her two-day visit (Oct. 31—Nov. 1), she will meet with government officials in charge of health and international cooperation to brief them on PAHO's new strategic vision and plans, learn about Canada's health system, and discuss Canada's current and future priorities for collaborating with the organization.
Etienne is scheduled to meet with senior staff of the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) and Health Canada; the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD); the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR); and the International Development Research Center (IDRC). She will also meet with representatives of the International Council of Nurses and the Canadian Nurses Association.
In addition, Etienne is scheduled to visit the Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health, a clinic that provides health services integrating Western medicine with traditional aboriginal healing practices.
PAHO Deputy Director Jon K. Andrus is accompanying Etienne on the visit.
Canada has been a member of PAHO since 1971 and is an active supporter of PAHO's work. The country currently serves as a member of the PAHO Executive Committee.
