The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and The BMJ Publishing Group (BMJPG) have signed a memorandum of understanding to promote and encourage research for health in the Americas region over the next five years.

Washington, April 3, 2017 (PAHO / WHO) - The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and The BMJ Publishing Group (BMJPG) have signed a memorandum of understanding to promote and encourage research for health in the Americas region over the next five years.

The agreement, signed by PAHO Director Carissa F. Etienne and Director of BMJ Americas Glenn Campbell, seeks to promote transparency in research, prevent the waste of research - due to poor research design or failed efforts to be published, among other reasons - and improve dissemination and use of research to contribute to improving public health and equity in the Americas.

Both parties will create incentives to develop research that is aligned with PAHO policies, support the preparation and dissemination of scientific articles, and bring together key partners in the region to share knowledge and experiences.

They will also work to increase the visibility of health research policy in the Americas and promote best practices in research for health, its governance, the integration of research in health policy, health care, and prevention services.

BMJ started out over 170 years ago as a medical journal, publishing our first research paper on the treatment of squinting. Now, as a global brand with a worldwide audience, they help medical organizations and clinicians tackle today's most critical healthcare challenges. This is done by publishing the newest, cutting edge academic research, providing professional development solutions and creating clinical decision support tools.

PAHO, founded in 1902, is the oldest international public health organization in the world. It works with its member countries to improve the health and the quality of life of the people of the Americas. It also serves as the Regional Office for the Americas of WHO.
