PAHO/WHO estimates 770 new cases daily of people with occupational diseases in the Americas

Some 770 people fall ill with an occupational disease daily in the Americas, according to estimates of the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) published on the occasion of the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, which is celebrated each year on April 28.

Globally, occupational diseases account for 86% of work-related deaths. The World Day for Safety and Health at Work was observed on April 28.

Washington, D.C., 29 April 2013 (PAHO/WHO) — Some 770 people fall ill with an occupational disease daily in the Americas, according to estimates of the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) published on the occasion of the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, which is celebrated each year on April 28.

PAHO/WHO is commemorating the World Day for Safety and Health at Work to raise awareness of the seriousness of occupational diseases, a silent epidemic that produces more than 281,000 new cases each year in the region, according to estimates based on data from nine countries.
