Dr. Mirta Roses Periago, Director of the Pan American Health Organization, was honored on Jan. 28 with the 2013 VIDA award of the National Alliance for Hispanic Health. The award recognizes "exceptional leaders for their commitment to securing the best health outcomes for all."

Accepting the award during a ceremony at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., Dr. Roses thanked the organization for the honor and observed that both PAHO and the alliance "share the dream and activism for Health for All and universal health coverage with quality for all. This makes us natural partners and allies in the battles for equity in public health."

"I am completing nearly three decades of a career in international public health, and in three days I will be passing the leadership of PAHO to Dr. Carissa Etienne," said Dr. Roses. "The VIDA award and this ceremony mean a lot as I close this cycle. Nevertheless, I will continue defending our peoples' right to health and will always be ready to support those who represent their interests and aspirations for a just, inclusive and peaceful world without stigma or discrimination."

The VIDA (Vision, Innovation, Dedication and Advocacy) award honors excellence and is a well recognized health award among Hispanics. Dr. Roses received the award during the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the National Alliance for Hispanic Health. The alliance is a nonprofit organization that has worked since 1973 to improve the health and well-being of Hispanics and represents thousands of Hispanic health providers across the United States.
