Journalists from Latin America and the Caribbean were invited to participate in a webinar to examine challenges and best practices when reporting on suicide. Dr. Dan Reidenberg, Executive Director of Suicide Awareness Voices of Education (SAVE) made a presentation on the subject. The seminar took place on the occasion of World Health Day, April 7, which in 2017 focused on depression, strongly linked to suicide.
Covering suicide - a tragic but highly prevalent public health problem - poses special challenges to journalists and the media. Participants discussed strategies and terminology that can be used to report suicides in an informative, accurate and responsible way to better serve readers and their communities.
