Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis, 26 February 2016 (PAHO/WHO)—Dr. Carissa F. Etienne, Director of the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), travelled to St. Kitts and Nevis in late February for an official country visit and to participate in a meeting of PAHO/WHO representatives stationed in the Caribbean.
Accompanied by Dr. Godfrey Xuereb, PAHO/WHO Representative for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, Etienne met with Prime Minister Timothy Harris, Minister of Health Eugene Hamilton, and other government officials to discuss ways of strengthening PAHO/WHO's technical cooperation in the country, in the context of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the upcoming post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Dr. Etienne also participated in PAHO/WHO's annual Caribbean Country and Subregional Managers' Meeting, on 23-27 February. The meeting focused on ways to strengthen PAHO/WHO's technical cooperation with Member States in the Caribbean, both individually and through subregional integration systems.
Dr. Etienne also visited Antigua and Barbuda, where she met with Prime Minister Gaston Browne, Minister of Foreign Affair, Max Fernandez, and national health authorities including Minister of Health Molywn Joseph and Chief Medical Officer Rhonda Sealy Thomas.
