The Pan American Health Organization has published detailed answers on controlling the mosquito vectors that transmit Zika virus, as well as dengue and chikungunya viruses. The new material, in question-and-answer format, explains what people need to know about the Aedes aegypti mosquito, how they can protect themselves against bites, and how they can eliminate mosquito breeding sites such as water containers or small pools of water around their houses and neighborhoods. PAHO also details the measures that public health authorities can take, such as fogging, indoor residual spraying, and using larvicide. "The most effective way to control the mosquitoes that carry Zika and other diseases is to integrate classic vector control methods with committed individual and community engagement in eliminating sites where the mosquitoes can breed", concluded the experts.
