Geneva, Switzerland (WHO-HQ) September 21, 2024 - The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), alongside the World Health Organization (WHO)’s Department of Maternal, Newborn, Child, Adolescent Health and Ageing, and other WHO regional offices (AFRO, SEARO, and WPRO), in collaboration with UNDESA, UNFPA, and various Member States, hosted a virtual event during the United Nations Summit of the Future Action Days.
The event, titled "Life Course Approach and Intergenerational Health: Discussing a WHO Framework on Operationalizing a Life Course Approach," focused on promoting health and well-being across the life course.
The discussion brought together key stakeholders worldwide, including representatives from the Dominican Republic, Japan, Sierra Leone, and HelpAge International. The event emphasized the importance of a life course approach, which seeks to optimize health outcomes from infancy through old age. Participants shared practical, evidence-based programs already being implemented in different regions to support this approach, focusing on early childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and healthy aging.
During the event, the Dominican Republic shared its experience addressing the challenges of an aging population. They highlighted their collaboration with PAHO in creating a Life Course Department, developing normative documents, and organizing workshops to support local implementation of life course strategies. These efforts reflect the country’s commitment to adopting a life course approach to improve health outcomes across all age groups.
PAHO remains committed to supporting countries in adopting comprehensive health strategies that promote intergenerational health and well-being. This collaborative event showcased the ongoing efforts to ensure people of all ages have the opportunity to live healthier, longer lives.
