The International Network of Ecoclubs of Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean held its first "International Workshop on the Prevention of Cholera" in La Vega, Dominican Republic, from 17 to 20 February. The workshop was sponsored by PAHO/WHO and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECI).

The event was organized from the experiences of cooperation against cholera among Ecoclubs in the Dominican-Haitian border. Border Ecoclubs have been working on issues related to solid waste management, water, sanitation and hygiene.

The overall objective of this workshop was to create a space to exchange and share experiences about cholera prevention and control in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Among topics discussed were how such programs have been implemented and how can they be replicated and referenced in order to define guidelines for other countries, strengthening programs aimed at promoting a culture of health among the population of the region.
