PAHO Director Carissa F. Etienne met with Bloomberg Philanthropies' Kelly Henning and Neena Prasad to discuss potential areas of collaboration in nutrition, obesity prevention, road safety and tobacco control.

"We want to increase our collaboration in areas like road safety, and obesity rates are going through the roof in some of our countries," Dr. Etienne said. Non-communicable diseases "are leading causes of morbidity, mortality and disability in the PAHO region," she added.

Dr. Kelly Henning directs global health programs at Bloomberg Philanthropies, including the Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use and the Bloomberg Global Road Safety Program. Dr. Neena Prasad directs Bloomberg Philanthropies' Global Obesity Prevention and Maternal and Reproductive Health Programs.

"Bloomberg Philanthropies is committed to the PAHO Region," Dr. Henning said. "Your region is a model for other regions and programs like obesity prevention in Mexico can be an example for other countries."

The Bloomberg officials were in Washington for technical discussions with PAHO's Department of Non-Communicable Diseases.
