19 November 2024 — Mary Lou Valdez, PAHO’s Deputy Director, along with Rodrigo Monrroy, Project Management Advisor for PAHO Forward, and Paul de la Croix-Vaubois, Human Resources Advisor, met on November 12 at PAHO headquarters with a delegation from the United Nations Volunteers (UN Volunteers) Program, led by Lita Paparoni, Regional Manager for Latin America and the Caribbean.

The meeting was held within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between PAHO and the UN Volunteers Program, which aims to explore future collaborations to integrate skilled volunteers in support of technical cooperation efforts across the Region of the Americas.

During the discussion, key areas were identified for the participation of volunteers in PAHO’s operations, and work plans for the coming months were outlined. Additionally, the Volunteer Program was presented to Human Resources focal points during their Regional Meeting, held from November 11 to 14 in Washington, D.C.

“The UN Volunteers Program provides greater flexibility and response capacity in crisis and emergency situations, such as the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Valdez.

“The program also contributes to capacity building within PAHO by bringing in skilled volunteers who can transfer knowledge and expertise to local staff. Furthermore, UN volunteers often work closely with local communities, fostering trust and cooperation, which are crucial for the success of health initiatives,” she added.

The implementation of this agreement is part of the second-year work plan of the PAHO Forward initiative, specifically its Action 3.15, which seeks to establish the UN Volunteers Program as a contractual modality across the region.

This collaboration underscores PAHO’s commitment to leveraging the potential of volunteerism to strengthen its capabilities and advance its mission of promoting health across the Americas.

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) Program is a global initiative that mobilizes volunteers to support peace and development worldwide. It offers individuals the opportunity to contribute to various UN missions and projects, while strengthening their skills and gaining valuable experience.
