PAHO launches teacher training course on Interprofessional Education in the Dominican Republic

Washington DC, July 17, 2024 (PAHO) - The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) launched a training course on Interprofessional Education in the Dominican Republic, that will prepare 35 health career teachers, officials from the Ministry of Health, and other key institutions in the country, to design and implement training teaching programs based on Interprofessional Health Education (IPE).

The initiative was presented during a virtual seminar on July 12, 2024, organized by PAHO’s Human Resources for Health unit and the PAHO office in the Dominican Republic, aiming to strengthen teaching capacities in IPE. The course is closed, and participants will receive ongoing support for developing implementation plans and evaluation of the IPE.

Interprofessional practice with consolidated health teams, whose knowledge, attitudes, skills and values are articulated to achieve efficient, safe and quality care, is essential. Interprofessional education stands out among the strategies to strengthen the training of health professionals, as it positively impacts on collaborative practice, contributing to the development of each health team member’s the capabilities. 

During the session, the conceptual and theoretical bases of IPE were presented, and the need to address it in universities and in the world of work was discussed. The impact of IPE on students and health systems, the quality of health care, teamwork, and practice focused on people, families, and communities were also addressed.

Representatives of the Ministry of Public Health of the Dominican Republic, the National Health Service of the Dominican Republic, the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo, the Catholic University of Santo Domingo and the PAHO/WHO Office in the Dominican Republic participated in the activity.

The training course program, which is being developed with the participation of an expert from the University of Litoral from Argentina, includes an in-person workshop to be held from August 13 to 15, and a second virtual seminar, on September 12.
