The new agreement builds on an ongoing collaboration between PAHO/WHO, the Organization of American States (OAS), and the Coimbra Group that awards postgraduate scholarships to students from Latin America and the Caribbean. As part of that collaboration, PAHO/WHO provides technical assistance in evaluating applications for the program's health-related scholarships, with emphasis on students interested in research for health. To date, 75 students from 18 countries have received scholarships for health-related graduate studies under the program.
Dr. Luis Gabriel Cuervo, PAHO/WHO Senior Advisor on Research Promotion and Development, said about the new agreement, "We are signing this agreement with the Coimbra Group of Brazilian Universities to further integrate the Policy on Research for Health of the Americas into the everyday work of these universities and the activities of the scholarship grantees. This agreement will result in putting these institutions and professionals at the forefront of knowledge production and use."
