Washington D.C., December 15, 2023. Two weeks ago, the Americas lost a true public health champion with the passing of the Pan American Health Organization Director Emeritus Dr. Carissa F. Etienne.
Today, the PAHO Health Emergencies Department pays tribute to Dr. Etienne’s exceptional leadership and unyielding commitment to combating public health emergencies and strengthening the preparedness and resilience of the countries of the Americas throughout the many public health crises faced by our Region over the 10 years that she was in office.
Under her leadership, PAHO spearheaded the response to one of the greatest public health challenges the Americas and the world have faced: the COVID-19 pandemic; and navigated the Region through unprecedented challenges, multiple devastating disasters of natural origin and complex humanitarian crises.
Dr. Etienne's trust, appreciation, and admiration for the work of the Organization’s Emergency team, coupled with her unwavering friendship, inspired us all to give the best of ourselves and overcome obstacles to serve the people of the Americas.
We will remember her fondly for her joyous spirit, deep faith in God, and comforting smile during difficult times.
May her legacy endure, offering peace and solace to her family, friends, and colleagues.
