Tegucigalpa, March 13, 2024 (PAHO/WHO). The nursing department of the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the National Autonomous University of Honduras initiated a training process for the master's students in the Postgraduate Program in Nursing with a Focus on Gynecology and Obstetrics through the workshop "Initial Management of Prioritized Obstetric Complications," as part of the campaign and workshop "Zero Maternal Deaths."
Melvin Chávez, facilitator and project coordinator of the "Improved Health of Women and Adolescent Girls in Situations of Vulnerability" project, funded by the Government of Canada, explained that the objective is to "strengthen the capacities of individual response and rapid response teams by nursing personnel and postgraduate students to prioritized obstetric complications, through a theoretical-practical workshop that includes the generation of simulation-based experiences."
Furthermore, Chávez explained, "the aim is to contribute to the training of specialized nursing personnel in perinatology to build human resources capable of attending obstetric patients throughout the country".
The head of the Nursing Department and the coordinator of the postgraduate program expressed their satisfaction with this partnership with PAHO/WHO, which will allow master's students and professors to update their knowledge by practising with the simulators and contribute to the reduction of maternal mortality in the country.
Paola Barrientos, field technician from PAHO, and workshop facilitator, encouraged her fellow nurses to learn these life-saving techniques. The practice included the use of the non-pneumatic anti-shock garment (NASG) and the use of the Bakri balloon in the management of postpartum haemorrhage, vital knowledge for reducing maternal mortality.
