Boosting Oxygen Supply in Suriname

Paramaribo, Suriname, 13 October 2020 (PAHO/WHO)–The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) Country Office in Suriname handed over 20 oxygen concentrators to the Ministry of Health to support the country in its response to COVID-19. The 20 oxygen concentrators will be distributed to health facilities to treat patients requiring oxygen.

Supplemental oxygen is the first essential step for the treatment of persons with moderate to severe COVID-19 who have low blood oxygen levels and these oxygen concentrators are portable, easy to set-up and maintain. The PAHO/WHO Representative, Dr. Karen Lewis-Bell, noted that the donation of biomedical equipment such as oxygen concentrators is in support of Pillar 7-Case Management, in the National COVID-19 Preparedness and Response Plan.

Further to this donation, Suriname will soon receive additional equipment including invasive and non-invasive ventilators, patient monitors and essential medicines. 

The Minister of Health, Dr. Amar Ramadhin, expressed sincere appreciation to PAHO/WHO for its continued support in strengthening the health system in Suriname and building the capacity of health workers on the frontlines.
