Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago, 11 May 2016. Doctors at the Port of Spain General Hospital announced that they have saved the life of a mother in her thirties who started bleeding after delivery using their newly acquired skills gained at a recent PAHO training on Post-Partum Haemorrhage (PPH). This training was held only one month ago (April 11-12, 2016), where 30 Obstetricians and Midwives were trained to use live-saving procedures and devices to manage Post-Partum Haemorrhage (PPH) i.e. bleeding after delivering a baby. Participants were also trained in the early diagnosis of PPH.
Dr. Rodolfo Gomez Ponce de Leon, Regional Sexual and Reproductive Health Advisor of the PAHO’s Centre for Perinatology and Women’s Reproductive Health (CLAP/WRH) conducted the training along with Dr. Hyder Torres, Dr. Adriano Tavares and Dr. Alfredo Guzman . These doctors continue to successfully conduct this training throughout the Americas, in countries with limited resources and with tens of thousands of births annually averting many deaths due to PPH.
Dr. Bernadette Theodore-Gandi assures that training of this nature will continue to support the country’s goal of zero maternal deaths.
