Washington, D.C., 10 December 2014 (PAHO/WHO) — Public health and human rights experts are meeting at the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) today to map out ways of advancing the health and human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) people.
In a two-day meeting, representatives of ministries of health in PAHO/WHO member countries as well as international organizations, human rights treaty bodies, academia, and civil society will discuss specific strategies and initiatives for collecting and analyzing data to be used in a proposed regional report on access to health care for LGBT people and the impact of limits on that access.
This week's meeting coincides with Human Rights Day 2014 and is intended to follow up on a pledge by ministers of health to address disparities in access and use of health services by LGBT people, during the 52nd PAHO Directing Council in 2013.
