Washington, D.C., 1 February 2013—The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) will organize a workshop together with the University of Albany on issues related to the health and human rights of prisoners in Latin America and the Caribbean.
This workshop, which will take place on 2 and 3 February, is part of ongoing efforts by PAHO's Office of Gender, Diversity and Human Rights (GDR), with support from the Organization's areas of Family and Community Health and Health Surveillance, Disease Prevention and Control to coordinate and strengthen collaboration with universities throughout the Region of the Americas, their students and faculty.
In collaboration with University of Albany's Institute for Health and Human Rights (IHHR) the workshop will gather more than 80 students in the fields of health and law from different universities working in the elaboration of modules aimed at improving health and human rights conditions in prisons throughout Latin American and the Caribbean , thus, raising awareness on this important issue.
The February workshop follows a previous visit to the University by PAHO's Office of Gender, Diversity and Human Rights in May 2012 and a series of activities developed with faculty members and students related to the promotion and protection of excluded populations in situations of vulnerability throughout Latin American and the Caribbean.
