Nassau, The Bahamas, November 1, 2024 (PAHO) – The Pan American Health Organization and World Health Organization participated in the recent Thumb Wars to #EndPolioNow. Hosted by the Rotary Club of South Ocean, eager attendees were eager to begin a night filled with friendly competition to raise awareness and funds in support of Polio eradication.
Poliomyelitis, commonly called polio, is a highly infectious disease, caused by the poliomyelitis virus. Many poliovirus infections do not produce symptoms, but 5 to 10 out of 100 people infected with polio may have some flu-like symptoms. In 1 in 200 cases, the virus destroys parts of the nervous system, causing permanent paralysis in the legs or arms. Although very rare, the virus can attack the parts of the brain that help you breathe, which can cause death.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes October 24 as World Polio Day. On this day each year, Rotarians promote polio eradication by hosting initiatives to raise awareness about polio and share updates regarding Rotary International’s journey to end polio.
“I was defeated, having not had a thumb war in 25+ years that's understandable, but I had an amazing time. I am very appreciative of the effort of the Rotary Club and look forward to exacting my revenge in the future!”, Dr. Anton Best, HSS Advisor, PAHO/WHO The Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands Country Office.
The Region of the Americas was certified free of wild polio in August 1994. PAHO encourages countries to maintain high vaccination coverage and strengthen surveillance to keep communities safe from the risk of a possible event or outbreak. Let's #EndPolio
To 30 more years free of wild polio in the Americas.
To 30 more years of commitment and dedication.
