Hurricane Beryl
The Caribbean (Update)
On 8 July 2024, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) published updated information on the hurricane Beryl in the Caribbean region. According to the information, the hurricane caused significant damage across several islands, including Grenada, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Jamaica. At least 12 deaths were reported. In the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique, in Grenada, between 95-100% of homes were either damaged or destroyed and more than 3,000 people were evacuated. The Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique informed that on 7 July, 15 shelters remain opened housing 478 people. In Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Bequia and Union Island were affected and about 1,700 people were evacuated to shelters. In Jamaica, more than 400,000 people were affected by power outages, two deaths were reported and 1,876 people are in shelters, of which, 113 are children.
