On 23 September 2024, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported that hurricane John had made landfall along the southern coast of Mexico just to the south-southwest of Marquelia, Mexico in the state of Guerrero. Media has reported more than 98,000 were affected by the power outages in Guerrero and there were three deaths reported. Media is also reporting the government of Guerrero suspended classes in Acapulco and Costa Chica and the same measures were taken in the state of Oaxaca.
