On 21 May 2023, the National Coordination of Civil Protection in Mexico (CNPC per its acronym in Spanish), updated the Popocatépetl Volcano Alert to yellow: phase 3. This phase indicates increased activity of the volcano, as well as the dispersion of ash in several nearby cities at high velocity. As of 22 May, 573 explosions had been recorded from the Popocatépetl volcano, of which 70% were minor. On 21 May, the Hermanos Serdan International Airport, in the state of Puebla, was closed due to the volcanic ash fall.
