Haiti
On 14 August, the Haiti Ministry of Culture and Communication reported a 7.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred in the southern region of the country the same day about 12 km northeast of Saint Louis du Sud, Sud Department, and was 10 km deep. On 16 August, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) reported 1,297 deaths, 5,700 injuries, 700 building collapses, and 2.2 million people who were exposed to strong MMI/VI level or above shaking. Media reported that the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC) has donated non-food aid to 4,500 people, the Dominican Republic has dispatched a shipment of 10,000 rations of food and medicine, and Mexico has likewise contributed 15.4 tons of aid in shipments of medicine, search and rescue equipment, and supplies. Haiti is currently on yellow alert due to a risk of heavy rains and strong winds caused by Tropical Storm Grace which is projected to make landfall on 16 or 17 August. Dominican Republic (Update)
On 15 August, the Dominican Republic Emergency Operations Center (COE, per its acronym in Spanish) announced that 20 provinces are on red alert and 11 provinces are on yellow alert for possible flooding of rivers, streams, and ravines, as well as sudden or urban floods, due to the passage of Tropical Storm Grace which is currently located about 160 km southeast of Cabo Engaño and about 290 km southeast of Santo Domingo. According to media, the predecessor to Tropical Storm Grace, Tropical Depression Fred, caused the evacuation of 5,975 people with 1,195 homes partially affected and 10 homes that were destroyed. There are currently 48 people who remain in the official shelter established in Capotillo, Santo Domingo. In total, 11 communities were left isolated, and 3 roads and one bridge were affected. Additionally, 11,859 people were left without electricity and 829,338 people were left without potable water after 64 aqueducts were affected. The reports are available at: COE and La República.
